about

The first single from our upcoming record Small Fries.

Let It Burst was an interactive sculpture and sound piece displayed as a public work of art around major cities in the UK. The sculpture was a large mosaic foot that plays five vocal loops, which when layered up, form an excerpt of this tune. Motifs were triggered by touching each of the toes. You can play with a digital version on our website - publicbroth.com

Conceived during a period of homelessness the project was undertaken as a means of finding joy during a period of bleakness. In an age where life is increasingly online, depriving us of meaningful social interaction, and physical art often perceived as inaccessible or too costly, we wanted to bring the work to the public and encourage play. It is both a rejection of aspects of modernity and a monument to overcoming adversity.

Let It Burst makes use of the Pythagorean scale, rarely heard in modern western music, to create a feeling of unfamiliarity, neither happy nor sad. This Ancient Greek scale informed the choice of mosaic as a material for the sculpture. The time consuming and imperfect nature of mosaic is in contrast to our growing culture of immediacy and flawlessness.

*** DISCLAIMER ***
The music came first and always will. Public Broth created this work because they wanted to. They built it because they wanted to. They took it around the UK cos they wanted a holiday. They never meant to make 'art', they were just fed up of their music being ignored. They wanted to have fun and engage people. This was never intended to be exhibited anywhere other than street corners.
